"God's intention for each of us is that we should grow to the point where he can empower us to do what we want - then he can turn us loose on the universe!"  Dallas Willard

"Do not worry about tomorrow. I have come that you might have life abundantly. Be not afraid."

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE:

The Blue Parakeet:  Rethinking How You Read The Bible
by Scot McKnight

Consider using a notebook for this book journey so that you can track God at work in you and in others as we do this together.  What might seem insignificant now could tie in with something important later.  Before you read or wrote, please pray for the Spirit's illumination, not just in you, but in all of us who are reading together this summer.

How to Read the Bible For All It’s Worth

Reading scripture is something of a life skill for followers of Jesus, but spending time in the breadth and depth of the Bible can be at turns difficult, daunting, or even down right confusing! Our faithful time spent in it’s pages can still leave us scratching our heads, having read a lot of words, but missing the Word!

“How to Read the Bible For All It's Worth” is a group study that attempts to examine and build practical skills to tackle the several types of ancient literature that make up the Scriptures. For example, how is reading a Psalm different than a book of laws, or the words of a prophet? How can knowing the differences help us understand what the passage meant to the original hearers and to us today?

This Fall, we will be studying the book of John.  As a study guide, we will be using the NIV Application Commentary John.  Books can be ordered through the church office for $25.

Contemplative Prayer Group - Imago Dei

David says, "When you said, 'Seek my face', my heart said 'Your face O Lord, I will seek."

I have been connecting with some people who are faithful members of the Mennonite faith tradition but who are looking for something more commonly found in other denominations.  Please read this quote from the leader of Imago Dei, a contemplative prayer movement out of Vancouver:

"What is asked of us is not necessarily a great deal of time devoted to what we regard as spiritual things, but the constant offering of our wills to God, so that the practical duties which fill most of our days can become part of His order and be given spiritual worth."

The spiritual discipline means filling our minds with ideas that point the right way, instead of ones which distract us from God and spiritual things.  It means also some time, even a very short time, given to communion with Him; and perseverence in this practise.  This will also involve expelling from our life those thoughts and acts which are inconsistent with our desire for communion with God."

If your heart agrees with what has been expressed, you may be interested to know that a small group of people are gathering once a month for prayer, scripture reading and reflection, listening/quietness and fellowship.  Except for July and August, we meet the first Monday of every month at 7 pm at the FaithWorks office, 775 Cambridge Street.  You are welcome to come, without any obligation, to "taste and see that the Lord is good".  Feel free to share this with others whom you think may be sensing God's nudge in this direction.

Please call Pastor Mary for more information or if you have any questions.
